CMAIA Membership

The CMAIA Membership Program - "Clinical Member of AIA" - Special Application Process

The Education Committee has established the guidelines for various levels of aromatherapy training, including training at the Clinical Level (CMAIA).  For those who are currently studying or planning to
achieve this clinical level, the AIA offers a new level of membership; CMAIA or Clinical Member of the AIA.

Please read this page before applying for CMAIA Membership.

Can't wait to get started? Click here to obtain the application for CMAIA membership: $15 fee.

The requirements for the CMAIA designation include:

  • Attendance at a clinical level school or equivalent training (minimum of 400 contact hours
collectively with a minimum of 50 hours in Anatomy & Physiology).
  • Submittal of a case study with the initial application.
  • Submittal of a copy of certificate(s) or dipoma(s) awarded with the initial application.
  • Submittal of a copy of your school transcript(s) with the initial application.
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate submitted with the initial application and updated annually.
  • Practitioner liability insurance coverage certificate submitted with the initial application and
    updated annually.
  • To renew the CMAIA membership, you must have completed 20 contacts hours of CPDs during
the previous membership year. Click here to see a list of aproved CPD (continuing professional development) categories.
  • Payment of dues at the Clinical Level
  • Membership in the AIA in good standing

For those members who already meet the requirements for the Clinical Level AIA membership and
have a current First Aid/CPR certificate, you may request an application to "upgrade" your membership
to the CMAIA level before the July annual renewal date. There is a non-refundable $15 fee that upon acceptance at the CMAIA level will be applied to your annual dues which may be pro-rated, depending
on when you apply and are approved.

The CPD requirements are similar to those needed to maintain the Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC) Registered Aromatherapist (RA) credential, as well as maintaining a professional or clinical membership in an international aromatherapy organization; such as the IFA, IAAMA or IFPA.

What are the benefits of being a Clinical Member of the AIA?

  • Your clients will recognize that you have achieved a level of excellence in your education and practice, and you continue to keep current with research and training.
  • You will be able to use the initials CMAIA after your name to indicate that your education in clinical aromatherapy meets the new standards for clinical aromatherapy training as outlined by the AIA.
  • You will receive a pin to wear on your work attire to indicate that you have achieved this level.

Please note:  The CMAIA program does not negate the purpose of or the achievement of an RA status through the ARC.

Guidelines and Forms have been prepared to provide you with a comprehensive document for processing your application. Simply print out the pages that you desire. The application form may be filled out on the computer then printed out for signature and filing. Please read through all the instructions and if you have any questions please contact us.

Applications will be reviewed on a quarterly basis throughout the year. The filing and processing schedule is as follows:
