Teleconferences

AIA's Teleconference was held on November 16, 2011

Our Presenter: Lora Cantele, RA, CMAIA, CSRT

Topic: Enhancing Quality of Life: Children with Life-Limiting Disorders

About the Teleconference:
In this teleconference, Lora will present several case studies from her time spent at the Marklund Children’s Home in Bloomingdale, IL where she worked as part of a team to provide more supports for children with life-limiting illnesses.  Many hospices provide aromatherapy, music therapy, massage therapy and reiki to their patients at the end of life.  What about the those who are not terminal, but are suffering just the same?  This was a question put to the foundation of the Hospice and Palliative Care center in Barrington, IL.  They agreed and Hope’s Circle of Friends was assembled to help to improve the quality of life for children with severe brain disorders at the Marklund Children’s Home.  The aims of the pilot program were to show that complimentary forms of health care may help in easing pain and suffering, agitation and emotional distress and provide some alternatives to wound care and infection.  Lora will discuss various protocols created for the aromatherapy portion of the program and their effectiveness.

Meet Lora Cantele
Lora Cantele is a Registered Aromatherapist and a Clinical Member of the AIA.  After graduating from the American College of Health Sciences in 2004, Lora began a journey that led her to England to become a board certified teacher for the Penny Price Academy of Aromatherapy and the eventual satellite school just outside Chicago.  “I’ve been very fortunate in that I have been able to attend several clinical aromatherapy conferences in the UK.  I was always interested in learning more about expanding the use of essential oils from just a ‘smell good, feel good’ paradigm to clinical use.  I tried to bring that information to my local community and had contacted the largest hospice in Illinois.  After a few years I had my opportunity.”
