Teleconferences
AIA's
Teleconference held on May 21, 2008
Our presenter: Sara Holmes
Topic: Essential
Oil Therapy in Colleges as a CAM Modality
About
the Teleconference:
During this teleconference I hope we will share and collaborate
on how we can advance aromatherapy education in the college arena.
It is my understanding that the majority
of aromatherapy courses are currently taught as part of a massage
therapy, continuing education or community education curriculum.
All of these courses
are creating valuable opportunities for advancement of the art and
science of aromatherapy.
Creating and teaching a basic and advanced aromatherapy
course as part of the Health Professions Department at Parkland
College in Champaign, IL has been both a challenge
and a reward. These courses are based on NAHA guidelines (see www.naha.org)
and required me to attend curriculum board meetings, learn how to
write my own syllabus and develop a college level aromatherapy program.
Through our courses we offer certification and a total of seven
college credit hours. Since 2004, we have also added two courses
in Complimentary and Alternative Therapies and are in the process
of developing a CAM Advisory Board.
As opportunities increase for us to advance the use of essential
oils for health and
wellness, it is critical that we continue to advocate accredited
colleges to offer
aromatherapy and other CAM courses to students studying in the health
professions fields of nursing, dental hygiene, veterinary technician,
surgery technician, x-ray technician,
respiratory technician and massage therapy. We will discuss the
broad aspects of
introducing this topic as well as the details. It is up to us as
providers of complimentary
health care services such as aromatherapy to prove how these courses
will benefit students enrolled in health career programs.
The programs I originally presented to Parkland College could not
have been created without the support and help of my NAHA and AIA
colleagues: Sylla Sheppard Hanger, Kelly Holland Azzaro, Nancy d’Angelo,
Dr. Raphael d’Angelo, Laraine Kyle, and Shellie Enteen too
name just a few. Several of my aroma-friends and mentors have generously
offered to join us in this call to share our collective experiences
with those of you considering this aromatic journey in the field
of higher education.
About
Sara Holmes
Sara Holmes currently teaches Complementary and Alternative Therapy courses at Parkland College in Champaign, IL. Many of her students are health professionals who recognize aromatherapy and massage as part of the new holistic approach to health and wellness. “Put most simply, you don’t just feel better; you are better!”
The best caregivers make a profound difference to their patients in ways that might not be part of "traditional medicine." That's what she observed during her ten years in health care management, so when her children grew older, and she returned to college (B.S. , magna cum laude, Greenville College, Greenville, IL), to study alternative therapies, and became both a Registered Aromatherapist and a Licensed Massage Therapist with advanced certifications from several industry leaders.
