AIA Research Academy Mentoring Program

Do you want to publish a case study? We can help!

We are reaching out from the AIA Research Academy to see if you want mentoring to help you publish your case study. This group mentoring series is designed to be fun and motivating. Our goal is to have you ready to submit your case study for publication.

For the 2026 Group Mentee Series, mentees must already have completed their case study and received feedback. AIA Mentors will guide you from your next steps through submission. This series is held in collaboration with the Alliance of International Aromatherapists' Journal, Aromatics in Action®, and we will provide those case study guidelines. If you wish to publish elsewhere, simply include that information in your application.

Join us for an open discussion to share what is currently relevant in our work and practice. Bring a formulation, ingredient, technique, research finding, clinical experience, or topic that has been on your mind lately. Whether you’ve discovered something new, refined an approach, or simply have a question or idea you’d like to explore, this is an opportunity to exchange perspectives, discuss what’s working (and what isn’t), and learn from one another. All topics related to aromatherapy, formulation, and wellness are welcome.

Learner Outcomes:

Discuss the plants that are currently inspiring your work, studies, or personal interests.
Learn from others’ experiences with cultivating, using, and exploring aromatic and medicinal plants.
Leave with new insights, ideas, and connections to support your ongoing plant journey.

Jodi Kelsey is a retired Air Force logistics officer, educator, consultant, formulator, and founder of 3Js Pure Botanicals. Since 2013, she has focused on plant-based healing to support a more natural lifestyle, specializing in botanical skincare crafted with essential oils, herbs, and hydrosols. She holds MS degrees in Aromatherapy and Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences and has trained with the Aromatic Wisdom Institute, the School for Aromatic Studies, the Herbal Academy, Kami McBride, and Susan Parker. Jodi combines science, tradition, and creativity to teach and advocate for the therapeutic power of plants.

Learner Outcomes:

Be able to understand the importance of publication in the research process

Be able to understand the problems engendered by a twisted interpretation of the role of bibliometric tools such as the impact factor

Be aware of the importance of journal selection from technical and ethical points of view, and with the critical role of peer review as part of the scientific process

Arguments will be presented that after the completion of a study there still remain important steps before we can claim to have produced scientific evidence. These steps include the publication of the paper, to offer our research to the scrutiny of the scientific community. The bibliometric turn will be discusses together with the issue of predatory journals and the danger they pose to quality and credibility of research. I will then exemplify some of the obstacles that can be encountered in the publication effort, and look at them critically.

Marco Valussi is a qualified, UK-trained, clinical herbalist (BSc. (Hons.)) and aromatherapist (ITHMA). He has been working in this field for 30 years, and over the years has moved from clinical work to consultancy, independent research and teaching. He teaches clinical herbalism and aromatherapy at various University Masters, has published two university textbooks on essential oils’ science and Materia Medica, an introductory text for beginners and more than 20 scientific papers (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9108-848X). He also works as a consultant for the essential and distillation industry, and for NGOs operating in the field of traditional medicine.
