Meet the Board of Directors

The members of the Board of Directors are elected by the Membership annually. Some positions are elected for a two-year period.



Raphael d'Angelo, M.D. - President (2015-2016)
I have been actively involved in the aromatherapy industry for over 25 years as a practicing clinician heavily using aromatherapy for myself, my family and my patients. I served as a regional director for NAHA for a number of years. I was cofounder and first president of Aromatics in Action and was instrumental in recruiting members which culminated in our first national conference in 2005. In 2006 I cofounded the Alliance of International Aromatherapists and served two years as its first president. Since that time I have supported AIA as medical advisor to the board.


Nancy C. Graves, MBA, CA, HHC - Vice President (2015)
Nancy Graves has been studying a variety of healing arts for over 15 years. With a Bachelors of Science from Penn State University and an MBA from Pepperdine University, she brings forth both a scientific and business perspective to her services for AIA. She is a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist, Certified Holistic Health Coach, Kundalini Yoga Instructor and a Reiki Master Instructor. Her career experience includes Operations Management and Analysis, Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance.

Colleen Thompson, RA, EOT - Secretary (2015)
Colleen Thompson has worked in the field of Aromatherapy since 1995 and has been a Registered Aromatherapist® since 1997. Colleen has owned 3 aromatherapy stores over the course of her career however her main focus these days is teaching Aromatherapy Certification through her school Essence of Thyme College of Holistic Studies. Colleen has sat on many Boards in a variety of capacities and looks forward to being the interim secretary for the Alliance of International Aromatherapists until the end of the term in December 2015.


Bev Day, MBA, CFE, RA - Treasurer (2015-2016)
Bev Day is a Registered Aromatherapist, aromatherapy and business educator, seminar leader, and co-founder of AIA. She shares her passion for aromatherapy and business dynamics through teaching, working with clients and serving as AIA Executive Director. Prior to aromatherapy entering her life, and equipped with an MBA degree from the University of Utah, Bev devoted over 23 years working as an auditor, accounting supervisor and regulatory manager. In these roles she supervised troubled companies, proposed statutory law, testified before legislative committees, served on a national oversight committee, and trained auditors.

Cary J. M. Caster, LMT, CA - Director (2015-2016)
A graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Botany, Cary began her career as a botanist. Cary then obtained a Certificate in Aromatherapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine from The Institute of Traditional Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy in London, her LMT license from The Florida College of Natural Health, an Advanced Aromatherapy and Teacher Training from Aromahead Institute in Sarasota, FL, and an Advance Clinical 1 and II Aromatherapy Certification at Essential Oil Resource Consultants in France. In 2009, Cary founded 21 Drops, LLC, a line of essential oil blends.

Nancy d'Angelo, CA - Director (2015-2016)
In 2003 I co-founded Aromatics In Action. Our first conference was in 2005. This group morphed into the Alliance of International Aromatherapists. I am a co-founder of AIA, serving as the first executive director. For the past 15 years, I have owned and operated an essential oil business. Together with my husband I have educated and mentored hundreds of students. Working in a health care setting, I have the opportunity to support many people in achieving optimal health. I jointly originated the AIA monthly teleconferences that I have the privilege to host to this day.

Joan Price-McLaughlin, BA, CA - Director (2014-2015)
Joan is a certified aromatherapist and the owner of Aromatix Signature Scents, a business that focuses on educational workshops for newcomers to aromatherapy, and private consultations in the greater Chicago area. Her background includes over twenty years as a paralegal, both in firms and on her own freelancing. She served on the planning committees for both the 2009 and 2011 AIA International Conferences.

Carol Scheidel, RN, CCAP - Director (2015-2016)
I have a passion for aromatherapy and a passion for professionalism.  I am a Registered Nurse and became a Certified Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner in 2005.  I teach and practice clinical aromatherapy in a large hospital in Fort Worth, Texas where I am also the nurse ethicist.  The hospital clinical aromatherapy program has more than 25 CCAP on staff.  I have taught aromatherapy to 150+ students.  I have presented at international aromatherapy conferences in Mexico, Japan and France. I have training and education in a variety of complementary/integrated modalities including Reiki, Healing Touch, Guided Imagery, Chakra Healing and dowsing. 


Betty Surette, BSN, CCAP, LMT, CHPN - Director (2014-2015)
I have been a nurse for 44 years. Became interested in complementary medicine in the '90s. Studied therapeutic touch in 1994, then Reiki in 1996, integrative imagery, became a massage therapist in 2000 and studied under Jane Buckle for aromatherapy certification in 2006. I have used aromatherapy in the hospice program and developed a mouthwash for patients with mucocitis from chemo/radiation treatments and for Candida infection, and an aromatherapy solution for wound care..
