Winter Letter from the President

Greetings,

Happy Summer Solstice to those of you in the Southern Hemisphere. Happy Winter Solstice from snowy Minnesota! For me, the Winter Solstice signifies a time for reflection and new beginnings. This is perfect as I reminisce about my role as AIA President. I’ve thought about the last four years and everything our AIA Board of Directors, Representatives, Committees, and COO accomplished during my presidency. It has been truly amazing. I have personally heard wonderful comments from the global aromatic community.

I believe it is our highest achievement to do our best and mentor people so they can start where we leave off and take everything to the next level. On January 1st, I step away from the role as president. I’m confident that our new AIA President and Board of Directors are very capable of moving the Alliance of International Aromatherapists forward in an exciting way.

AIA Board of Directors: We are grateful for the service of Bruce Boynton, Nancy Lubin, and Marian (Marnie) Reven, who are stepping off of the board at the end of December. These three have been strong advocates for AIA in many ways and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Luckily for us, they will all stay involved in AIA committees. I completed my second term as president and will also be leaving the board. I am very excited to introduce the new board.

Your 2026 Board of Directors:

    • Jirbie Go, President
    • Amanda Lattin, Vice President
    • Julie Duke, Secretary
    • Amanda May-Fitzgerald, Treasurer
    • Cary Caster, Director
    • Lorrie Hargis, Director
    • Madeleine Kerkhof, Director
    • Veronica (Rhani) Thomas, Director
    • Judy Ratliff, Director
    • Mimi Russell De Martin, Director

            Learner Outcomes:

            • Demonstrate how to make a table, graph, and figure for a scientific study
            • Understand ways in which data can be slanted to support a narrative
            • Demonstrate how to critique a table, graph, and figure as a reviewer
Effective scientific communication depends not only on the data itself, but on how that data is presented. This webinar provides a practical, hands-on overview of how to create clear and accurate tables, graphs, and figures for scientific studies and presentations. Participants will learn how design choices, scaling, and data selection can unintentionally—or intentionally—slant data to support a particular narrative. The session will also develop critical review skills, guiding participants through how to evaluate and critique tables, graphs, and figures as a scientific reviewer. By the end of the webinar, attendees will be better equipped to both present data responsibly and assess the quality and integrity of data visualization in scientific work.

Bruce R. Boynton, MD, PhD, is the AIA North Carolina Representative and a member of the AIA Board of Directors. He has had a distinguished career as a Naval Officer, pediatrician, researcher, editor, and hospital administrator. He studied at Aromahead Institute, Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy and The Heal Center in Atlanta, GA. He is the Editor of the Journal of Health and Human Experience. He taught research study design in universities and major medical centers for over 25 years and have a Masters degree in epidemiology.
